DimeTown is a multiplayer game you play in a browser at dimetown.com or in the DimeTown app for iPhone, iPad and Android. This policy explains what we collect when you play, why, who processes it for us, and how to get it deleted. "We" means the team that runs DimeTown. Reach us at support@dimetown.com.
The short version. There are no accounts, emails or passwords: your character lives behind a random key saved on your device. What you type in the game is shown to other players nearby and read by AI services (TypeSafe's Jev and OpenAI) that play the city's locals. We collect pseudonymous analytics to improve the game. We don't sell data, show ads or track you across other apps and websites. You can delete your character, and everything about it, from the phone in the game.
What we collect
| What | Examples | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your character | The name, look and side you pick; cash, bank, stats, pockets, position and progress; a random key that identifies the character (saved on your device) | To run the game and keep your progress |
| What you type and do | Chat, actions, out-of-character chat, texts to other players, words you add to an action; what you do in the game (jobs, rolls, arrests, deaths) | To show it to the players it's meant for, to let the city react, and for moderation |
| Safety records | Reports you send or that are about you (with the recent lines they're about), who you've blocked, lines our filter stopped, strikes, mutes and bans | To keep the game safe and act on reports |
| Device and usage | A random ID made by the game on your device; device type, operating system, browser and their versions, screen size, language; performance (frame rate); when sessions start and end and which parts of the game you use | Analytics and diagnostics, and to enforce bans |
| Approximate location | Country, region, city and time zone, worked out by our hosting provider from your IP address | Analytics (where people play from). We don't store your IP address; it is used briefly to limit abuse and then discarded |
On iPhone and iPad, the app may ask Apple whether you're 18 or older (Declared Age Range). We use the answer once, to decide whether you can play, and don't store it.
We don't collect your real name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos, precise location or payment details. Please don't put real-world personal information into the game: our filter blocks contact details, but it isn't perfect.
The AI that runs the city
DimeTown's locals are played by AI. When you type something in the game, that text and the relevant bits of game state (who's nearby, what's happening, what a local remembers about your character) are sent to:
- TypeSafe (the Jev model), which judges what you're trying to do, who you're talking to, how people react, and whether a line breaks the rules; and
- OpenAI, which writes new lines for the locals when none of the city's existing lines fit.
We send them game text, not your device ID or analytics. They process it to provide their service to us. OpenAI says data sent through its API isn't used to train its models by default and may be kept for up to 30 days to monitor abuse. Lines the locals say may be saved and reused, and locals may remember and repeat what your character did or said.
You agree to this processing when you accept the rules on first launch. If you don't want what you type to be read by AI, please don't play.
Who else sees it
- Other players. What you say is shown to players near your character, texts go to the player you send them to, and your character's name, look and actions are visible in the city. The in-game newspaper can report what happened.
- Service providers who process data for us: Cloudflare (hosting and database), TypeSafe and OpenAI (AI, as above), PostHog (analytics), and the messaging tool our moderators use to receive reports.
- When the law requires it, or to protect people's safety. We report child sexual exploitation to the authorities.
We don't sell or rent personal information, and we don't share it for advertising.
How long we keep it
- Your character is kept until you delete it. A character that dies stays on record as part of the city's history; email us to have a past character deleted.
- Game event logs and AI request logs are kept on a rolling basis (the most recent 20,000 events and 3,000 AI requests) and overwritten as the city goes on.
- Texts keep the most recent 120 per character.
- Reports and moderation records are kept for as long as needed to keep the game safe, including after a reported character is deleted. If you delete your character, open reports you sent stay without your name.
- Bans and mutes are also tied to the random ID the game made on your device.
- Analytics are pseudonymous and kept by PostHog under our retention settings.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your character any time: in the game, open the phone, tap the gear, then Delete. It removes the character and what's recorded about it. See Delete your character.
- Block and report anyone from their name, a line in the chat history, or a text thread.
- Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or port your data, or to object to or restrict how we use it. Email support@dimetown.com with your character's name and we'll respond within 30 days. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Adults only
DimeTown is for people 18 and older. We don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you think a minor is playing, tell us and we'll delete the character.
Where it's processed
Our providers run globally, including in the United States. When data leaves your country, we rely on our providers' contractual safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses).
Security
Everything travels over encrypted connections. Your character's key is random and known only to your device and our server. No system is perfectly secure; if something goes wrong, we'll tell affected players where the law requires it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change affects what you agreed to, the game will ask you again before you play.
